Print vs Embroidery
Printing vs Embroidery – What’s the Difference?
At Print & Stitch Studio, we’ve been producing custom garments for over 10 years, supplying schools, businesses, and organisations across the UK. One of the most common questions we’re asked is whether to choose printing or embroidery.
Both methods offer high-quality results, but the best option depends on your design, garment type, and how the clothing will be used.
—Embroidery
Embroidery involves stitching your design directly into the fabric using high-quality threads. This creates a premium, textured finish that is extremely durable.
Best for:
• School logos
• Staff uniforms
• Business branding
• Polo shirts and hoodies
Benefits:
• Long-lasting and hard-wearing
• Professional, premium appearance
• Does not fade or peel
• Ideal for repeated washing
Things to consider:
• Not suitable for very detailed or large designs
• Slightly higher cost for complex logos
Printing
Printing applies your design directly onto the garment using specialised inks. This allows for more detailed and vibrant designs, including full colour prints.
Best for:
• Leavers hoodies (e.g. “26” name designs)
• T-shirts and event wear
• School trips and group travel
• Promotional clothing
Benefits:
• Ideal for detailed, colourful designs
• More flexibility with artwork
• Great for larger prints
• Cost-effective for bulk orders
Things to consider:
• May wear over time with heavy use
• Not as textured as embroidery
Which Should You Choose?
For most school leavers hoodies, we recommend a combination of both methods:
• Embroidery for the front logo
• Printing for the back design (e.g. “26” with names)
For businesses and staff uniforms, embroidery is usually the preferred choice due to its durability and professional finish.
For school trips, events, and promotional garments, printing is often the better option due to its flexibility and cost-effectiveness.
